I was listening to this song the whole day. I mean really listened to what it meant, and found that it was a theme that was really close to my heart, in short he’s saying “You did not have to end up like this! I wanted to take care of you. Stop complaining to me about him, cause you could have picked me, and I would have been so good for you, and it still fuckin burns me to this day!” Elvis Costello was able to put all this emotion like “I’m still not over you”, “Am I still not good enough in your eyes”, “Is there still a chance for us?”, “I can’t believe you picked him over me” and a lot more in two stanzas. That’s how good a song writer Elvis Costello is a rarity nowadays concise yet poetic.
